After a brief two-week refresh at the Sembawang Shipyard in northern Singapore, the Westerdam from Holland America Line is once again ready to take passengers on cruises. The Vista-class cruise ship, which can carry just around 2,000 guests, arrived back at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore today at 6:00 PM local time. She will depart tomorrow, Friday, 03 February 2023 at 4:00 PM local time on her first Singapore round-trip cruise of the season - a 11-night Thailand, Andaman Islands & Malaysia Cruise.

Two-Week Drydock At Sembawang Shipyard

After completing a 30-night one-way Auckland to Singapore repositioning cruise on 19 January 2023, Westerdam’s next stop was the Sembawang Shipyard in northern Singapore. She then underwent a two-week drydock period at the shipyard.

In the two weeks she was at the shipyard, Westerdam underwent periodical inspections and maintenance work. The ship also underwent hull cleaning to remove marine growth (essential for keeping the ship fuel-efficient), and received a new coat of paint!

Westerdam’s propulsion system also received attention during the drydock, as it is mostly underwater and not easily accessible when the ship is in service.

Depending on requirements set out by ships’ flag states and classification society rules, periodic dry docks like these typically happen once every two years for cruise ships.
